Over the years, I've watched thousands of children earn their first belt in karate. It's one of those moments that might not seem particularly significant to someone looking in from the outside. After all, it's only the first step in what can be a very long journey. But I've learned not to underestimate that first belt. For many children, it's the first tangible evidence that they can walk into an unfamiliar environment, learn something difficult, work at it, and get better.
