On Monday November 1, 2010 students at the two Canada’s Best Karate schools in Vaughan took a stand to promote physical activity among youth and avoid the trap of childhood obesity by donating over 160 pounds of their uneaten Halloween candy to the “Kicks For Candy” campaign.
The candy to be shipped to Canadian Forces soldiers serving abroad. The “Chosen Soldier Project” has volunteered to coordinate the shipments of candy to soldiers who may not regularly receive care packages.
Over the past three decades childhood and adolescent obesity has risen at an alarming rate.
According to Statistics Canada:obesity rates in children have almost tripled in the last 30 years. Approximately 26% of Canadian children ages 2-17 years old are overweight or obese.Additionally, 59% of children and adolescents do not eat the minimum requirement of 5 vegetable and fruit servings daily. Nearly one-third of US children ages 4-19 eat fast food everyday. Fast food consumption has increased five fold among children since 1970. In 2004, over a third of children aged 6 to 11 logged more than 2 hours of screen time each day; these children were twice as likely to be overweight/obese as were those whose daily viewing totalled an hour or less. And finally, for children in grades 9-10, over one-third do not participate in daily physical activity.
